Summary of the Day’s Event:
Play Ball Indiana offered fans a rare opportunity to interact with baseball authors on Saturday, March 14, 2008. The first Baseball Print and Film Festival brought four authors and one screenplay writer together for an intimate experience with the public.
Former Dodger, Carl Erskine, was the featured author. He spoke about his first person experiences with Jackie Robinson, who broke baseball’s color barrier. Erskine was both poignant and funny as he shared from the book “What I Learned From Jackie Robinson.”
Joining Erskine on the stage were authors Pete DiPrimio (Hoosier Hitmen), Todd Borden (Shut Up and Let Um Play), and Jeff Stanger (Trolley Dodgers). Also part of the panel was Dan O’Brien, who shared many tales of the eccentric Hall of Fame pitcher Rube Waddell. O’Brien has spent years researching and developing a screenplay on Waddell.
WISH-TV’s Dick Wolfsie moderated the panel. Wolfsie, an author of many books himself, facilitated questions from the audience and introduced each participant. The real treat came after the Q&A, as fans had the opportunity to purchase copies of the authors’ books, have them signed, and even have lunch with members of the panel.
The event was co sponsored by Follett Bookstore and R.J. Pile and took place on the campus of Butler University. Thanks to all of the authors and the participants!
