The Cal Ripken Sr. Foundation brought their signature program “Badges for Baseball” to Marian University on May 22 to the delight of about 100 boys and girls from the Indy RBI program, Boys & Girls Clubs and the Children’s Bureau of Indianapolis. Olympic track and field athletes Chris Huffins and Sharrieffa Barksdale worked with the kids on running races and relays and other agility exercises. The Indianapolis Police Department’s mounted horse patrol met the children, and Indy Car driver Zach Veach described what is like driving a car 230 mph and “catching on fire three times.”
Badges for Baseball is a program designed to facilitate the interaction between law enforcement and inner-city youth using an assortment of lessons on nutrition, anti-bullying, sportsmanship and team play, with fun games and activities. Play Ball Indiana received a grant in 2018 to pilot a new Badges program in Indianapolis at Garfield Park.
