DETROIT – The Indianapolis RBI Junior Baseball team finished a successful 2016 RBI Regional as the tournament runners-up after posting 3-1 record and outscoring opponents by a combined 45-13 margin during pool play. The Indy RBI team fell to host Detroit, 7-2, at Madonna University in the championship game.
The 2016 Major League Baseball Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities (RBI) regional competition began Friday, July 15, in Detroit, Mich. For the 20th consecutive year, Play Ball Indiana, the parent organization for Indianapolis RBI, fielded teams in each of the divisions: junior baseball (15u), senior baseball (18u) and softball (18u).
Indy RBI squads played round-robin schedules against teams from Cleveland, Detroit, Cincinnati and Pittsburgh. In each division, the two teams with the best records advanced to the championship game. Winners of the regional competition advance to the RBI World Series in Cincinnati at the state-of-the-art P&G Cincinnati MLB Urban Youth Academy.
Notably, Detroit was the site of Indianapolis RBI’s first regional competition in 1997. The original team competed at the senior baseball level and was composed exclusively of players from Indianapolis Public Schools high schools, including Emmerich Manual, Arsenal Tech, Arlington, Northwest and Broad Ripple.
Regional pool play games were played at four preliminary sites – University Liggett School Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. High School; Papp Park; and Kirby Field – with the championship games played at the University of Detroit Mercy (softball) and Madonna University (baseball).
