Beautiful sunshine and clear skies greeted nearly 300 young boys and girls and their parents, as Opening Day took place at the Lids Sports Complex at Forest Manor Park on Sat. May 5. The unmistakable smell of cooking hotdogs and hamburgers only added more flavor to a day of colorful uniforms, excited kids, and happy parents. Jr. RBI baseball is here!
The opening ceremonies featured team introductions, a military color guard from Howe High School and two first pitches thrown by Clyde Roenbeck of Lids and Julie Ragsdale, chairperson of the board for Play Ball Indiana.
It was an especially memorable day for the RBI Indianapolis program, as this opening day marked the first “official” opening day in the 17-year existence of the RBI Indianapolis program. Until being able to call Forest Manor Park home, all of the teams in the RBI program have played all over the city at various park and school diamonds.
Jr. RBI is a new program sponsored by Major League Baseball. It targets boys and girls ages 5-12. This year there are 24 teams in the Indianapolis Jr. RBI program, compared to six last year. Bob Haney, Jeremy O’Day, Eric James Theresa Weinzierl, and a small army of volunteers help run the program.
